I just had a wonderful weekend, but the end of it was kind of a bummer.
It was wonderful because I got to travel with my son to his latest competitive sports tournament, which is always a great time.
Busy, but great.
You get all the excitement of competition, you get quality time with your kids, you get to connect on a different level with the coaches and other parents.
The only bad part was wrapping it all up.
Living in Canada as I do, I’m starting to deal with some pretty sketchy weather.
The tournament ran late and there was a freezing rain storm coming in, so I decided not to risk a white-knuckle drive back in the dark on slick roads and grab a cheap hotel room for the night.
I called work to check if it was OK that I burn a half day of vacation time and start at noon Monday, and work was accommodating of course.
You see, my issue isn’t with my boss (a lovely person), or my job (which I actually don’t mind) at all.
My issue was with the fact I had to ask at all.
It grates on me more and more with each passing day.

The 1 main reason I’m trying to change my life writing online
This moment perfectly encapsulated the core reason why I want to leave commuter life behind within a year and why I’ve undertaken my Publish Every Day project (see below for an update) to do just that.
You see, it’s not about the money.
I already make decent money, and “getting rich” is pretty lame as far as reasons go for becoming an entrepreneur.
It’s about the autonomy.
It’s about being on a fun trip with my son, adjusting my work schedule accordingly so I can saunter back when I want, and not having to explain why and ask for permission like a child.
It’s about being accountable only to me (and I’m a tough boss on myself, believe me).
And it’s about working where, how, and when I want to.
Every time I hear people talk about how great hybrid work environments are, it’s a huge effort to keep my eyes from rolling out of my head.
Yay, another commute!
Again, this whole project is about controlling my own fate.
I couldn’t care less about being a multimillionaire.
(OK, I’m kidding, that would be nice).
But that’s not what actually drives me.
It’s about taking control of every aspect of your life … like an adult.
What’s driving you to pursue writing online and entrepreneurship? Let me know in the comments!
Publish Every Day project update: Day 52
I’m doing an experiment to see if I can make enough money to retire from office life within a year by publishing every day on different platforms and investing my earnings into passive income vehicles.
How much I need to retire: $250 CAD per day
What I earned on Day 52: $43.09 (writing) + $1.29 (YouTube) + $4.11 (dividend income) = $48.49 total
