In the fall of 2023, I launched an audacious project aimed at building a content side business that would allow me to quit my job within 1 year.
My plan was to publish at least 1 thing every day on at least 1 of the various platforms I have a presence on, be it Medium, YouTube, Amazon KDP, or Substack.
Although I was pretty consistent at the start, and that really got the momentum rolling for me, I can’t say I published every single day.
But the excitement over setting a life-changing goal and the commitment to seeing the project through for a year did keep me a lot more consistent than I otherwise would have been.
In order to leave the commuter life behind for good, I decided I needed, on average, about $250 CAD per day.
Did I earn that Year 1?
I did not.
So you could say I didn’t reach either of my goals.
Am I sad about that?
Absolutely not.
As I sit here and reflect on a project that has now returned more than $60,000 to me in a year and a half, including more than a handful of days over the past few months in which I blew past my daily earnings goal, I’m caught up in a thought that I can’t let go of.
What if I actually did Publish Every Day?

My plan moving forward
While I’ve been paid very handsomely for writing on Medium (which makes up the bulk of my earnings) one of my greatest regrets is that I never figured out YouTube.
I mean, yes, I did manage to get my channel monetized in 11 months, but a couple things held me back from fully embracing it:
I didn’t like being on camera (and subsequently took most of those videos down)
I knew that my niche - writing on Medium - was ultimately very limited
I did dabble in other types of videos, and I found that the pieces that took off quickest were usually:
Product reviews (i.e. is Medium worth it, is VidIQ worth it)
Stock market stuff
For example, my most-viewed video ever is this YouTube short about the dud of an ETF called SCHD:
So those are the areas I’m going to focus on moving forward.
I think I have an interesting way of pulling this off with a faceless channel, so stay tuned and subscribe there.
At the very least, I’m committing to publishing 3 times a week for 6 months.
I plan to publish on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday every week.
If it still sucks at that point, I’ll re-evaluate.
I also plan to get a lot more consistent here, publishing once a week on Mondays.
Tuesday-Thursday will be my Medium days.
If I could make $60,000 in a year and a half doing just a fraction of the publishing I planned to, what could I accomplish with a real Publish Every Day Project?
I’m about to find out.
I hope you’ll subscribe and join me on the journey!
Publish Every Day project update: Day 641
I’m trying to see if I can make enough money to quit commuter life within a year by publishing every day on various platforms and putting my earnings into passive income investments.
How much I need to retire: $250 CAD per day
What I earned this week (daily average): $125.11 (Medium) + $0.22 (YouTube) + $12.61 (stock trading) + $0.26 (stock dividends) = $138.20 total
What I’ve published in the past few days:
This post about how one country’s shocking move suggests you may never retire
