The time has finally come to take my own advice.
As you know if you’ve been following me on this account for any amount of time, I write almost exclusively about making money online writing on Medium.
People appreciate it a lot, and I’ve definitely enjoyed it, but there’s one thing that’s been weighing on me a lot lately.
It’s something I can actually no longer ignore because it’s costing me way, way too much money.
More on that in a moment.

The most important rule
A couple of months ago, I wrote an article called “One underrated and inspiring book to read if you absolutely hate your job”.
The book, if you’re interested, is called The 10 Pillars of Wealth by Alex Becker (affiliate link). It’s one of my absolute favorite self-improvement books of all time.
Actually, I recommend getting the audio version, which you can listen to for free by using my link if you’re new to Audible.
But I digress.
In that article, I touched on what I thought was the most important pillar of all listed by Becker.
Here’s what I wrote:
“One of the pillars really grinds down on the importance of separating time from money.
“If you’re building a business that’s just going to suck more hours of your life than the 9-to-5 did and that you have no hope of scaling, you’re headed in the wrong direction.
“Trust me, nothing is more satisfying or motivating than getting out of bed in the morning and checking how much money you made while you were sleeping. This is the kind of work you should be gravitating toward.
“Another pillar explains what I think is the most important lesson of the entire book: focusing solely on what gets you paid.”

The trap of writing about Medium
Lots of new writers get caught in the trap of writing about Medium because stories about Medium are typically some of the first things they see when they sign up.
They are led to believe that writing about Medium is a superhighway to riches.
The reality is that this couldn’t be further from the truth.
I recently touched on this in my article “1 major reason you must STOP writing about Medium to make real money”:
“Here’s the real, secret truth: writing about Medium isn’t going to make you much money on Medium.
“That’s because Medium doesn’t distribute stories about Medium.
“It’s right there in the platform’s distribution guidelines:
No meta — no stories written about Medium
“As such, it’s really hard to make much money writing about Medium!
“In order to join the $100 club and eventually crack the $1,000 club the way I did in December over at
James Julian, you need your stories to find a very wide audience.
“That means you need Medium to distribute your story into other people’s feeds.
“Without widespread distribution, you’re not really going anywhere.”

Opportunity cost
There are two reasons embedded in those quotes that make me think I’m done writing about Medium for good.
The first is that I need to focus solely on what gets me paid.
On my main account in April, I’m approaching numbers that many would consider a full-time income.
Now just because I’m having a huge month, it doesn’t mean that it’ll continue for the rest of the year.
If it did, however, I’d be in a position to consider taking a break from my day job and focusing full-time on content creation.
The second is that the account you’re reading right now has no chance of scaling.
Remember what I just wrote:
“One of the pillars really grinds down on the importance of separating time from money.
“If you’re building a business that’s just going to suck more hours of your life than the 9-to-5 did and that you have no hope of scaling, you’re headed in the wrong direction.”
Writing about Medium is a business that has no hope of scaling.
Without distribution, it’s a struggle to crack $100 a month, let alone $1,000.
Because my income from my main account is getting so high, I can no longer ignore the fact that an hour of writing here is actually costing me a ton of money in opportunity cost.
Quittin’ time
So, it’s time to say goodbye.
Unless I have a huge change of heart, this will be my last post on this account.
The truth is, I’m just repeating myself at this point anyway.
I’ve told you what you need to do. Now you need to go out and do it.
Having said all that, there are two ways you can still follow me and learn about writing on Medium:
Follow my main account
. I won’t be writing about Medium specifically, but I intend to create a publication that will, in a more general sense, talk about side hustling, business, and content creation.
Subscribe to my YouTube channel. I may still do earnings videos there because they’re really popular, but I’m reaching the same point where, if I don’t get monetized, it’s not really worth my time anymore. If you enjoy my videos and want me to keep making them, I really need you to go subscribe right now.
If you’re just happening upon this account now and want to learn, I’d suggest you go to my profile, start at Story 1, and work your way up to the present.
Again, my YouTube channel is an excellent resource as well.
I post tutorials, lessons, and earnings there. If you love this account, you’ll love my videos even more. Here are a couple of examples:
So that’s that! Thank you so much for reading all these months, and do connect with one of those other channels if you so desire.
